3 Simple Ways To Adjust Your Behaviour That Can Make A Huge Difference
Maybe you’ve resolved to eat better. News from your doctor, numbers on the scale, or just a general sense of “I can’t go on like this” can inspire us to want to make a change.
But where to start? There’s so much information out there; a lot of it conflicting. It’s hard to know who to trust. One thing most experts can agree on is we need less processed food and more real food. Other than that general guideline, you’ll need to make your own decisions about what’s healthy to consume for your particular body. We’re all very different.
Start by thinking about what you eat and drink regularly. Is there something you know you should eliminate? Start there. Even if you don’t make any other changes this can make a real difference. My cousin’s son was twenty-eight when he decided to stop drinking soft drinks, even ones with artificial sweetener. He’d always been a chubby guy, even as a little kid. He ended up losing forty pounds without really trying, just by making that one change. He has cheekbones now he never had before. It’s been eight years and the weight has stayed off. He’s still handsome with those cheekbones and he still drinks beer.
What’s your unhealthiest food or drink habit? Is it sugary beverages? Breakfast pastries every morning? A bag of chips or a box of cookies every night in front of the TV? Processed smoked meat at almost every meal? Pinpoint what it is and then eliminate it from your home and your days. Show kindness to yourself by making this promise to yourself and keeping it. Don’t be mean to yourself by breaking your own promises
Eliminating the worst thing is often enough for a lot of people. If the thought of that seems too hard right now then just eliminate the easiest thing that you know isn’t doing you any favours. I’ve stopped drinking sugary coffee drinks from coffee houses and convenience stores. I don’t need mochas or caramel macchiatos or french vanilla lattes. I was just buying them out of habit because the friends I had coffee with always ordered them. It was easy to just say, “Same, please” when it was my turn to order. But I knew all that sugar and who knows what else wasn’t good for me. So I just spoke a few more…
